Do's and Don'ts During Nesting Season
May 1 through October 31 is sea turtle nesting season, and Sarasota County has the highest density of loggerhead sea turtle nests on the Gulf of Mexico. Local sea turtle nesting success depends on everyone doing their part to make the process from egg to escape go as smoothly as possible. What do you need to know about sharing our beaches with these cute critters? Here are the four basic do's and dont's:
- Steer clear of marked nesting sites:
if you're curious, look from afar
- Don't take photos:
flashes and bright lights are disorienting to the turtles
- Keep the beach dark at night:
no cell phones, flashlights, fishing lamps, outdoor lights
- Close drapes/blinds at night:
to block indoor light from getting out
